Partnership for the Future of Hydropower

Intoto is pleased to announce an expanded partnership with Statkraft, Europe’s largest generator of renewable energy, marking a significant step forward in the application of SmartDam technologies to support dam safety and climate resilience.

Builds on three years of Innovation

Looking back: From an initial installation to today’s more refined setup. This work has gradually evolved over several years of collaboration.

The new phase of collaboration builds on three years of innovation and partnership, now extending the scope to include the continuous monitoring of multiple dams in Scandinavia. Time series data on key environmental factors—such as water levels, wave activity, ice pressure, and wind conditions—will be collected and analyzed to deepen understanding of natural forces affecting dam infrastructure. Intoto’s advanced instrumentation and data analysis

Example of the environmental data collected—such as wave height—that supports ongoing monitoring and analysis efforts.

“Our SmartDam™ technologies were developed to bring advanced monitoring and data analysis to dam environments,” said Frode Aagedal, CEO of Intoto. “We’re proud Intoto is trusted and acknowledged as a partner with Statkraft, one of the biggest players in the hydropower industry in Europe, and chosen due to the experience of collaborating with our technologies and team. We look forward to both operational and innovative work, and introducing new solutions to the global market.”

The partnership enhances existing efforts that have already delivered critical insight into how climate, waves, and ice affect dam structures. A key innovation includes the adaptation of offshore wave radar for use in dam reservoirs. This radar technology, along with new methods for measuring ice load, provides valuable data along the full length of the dam, calibrated against traditional point-based wave buoys.

Multi-Dam Deployment

The collaboration now includes several dam sites in Norway and Sweden, each contributing to a shared learning process.

The collaborative work spans several key dam sites: SiraKvina Kraftselskap in southern Norway, Statkraft in central Norway, and Vattenfall in northern Sweden.

Collaborating with Dampartner

The teams coming together on-site. Collaboration and shared knowledge remain central to the project’s progress.

Activities are coordinated and managed by Øyvind Lier of Dampartner, a Swedish firm with global expertise in dam safety and operations. Lier was contacted by Leif Basberg at Statkraft who together with Intoto, reimagined the future of dam safety and resilience.

For Statkraft, the expanded partnership offers more precise data to support investment and operational decisions in a changing climate. For Intoto, it confirms the trust in its technology and team, opening new opportunities for scaling and international deployment.

With this partnership, Intoto and Statkraft continue to explore how innovative solutions can ensure safer, more sustainable hydropower infrastructure.
