Advancing Climate-Resilient Dam Safety

Intoto is pleased to announce a new three-year contract to deliver advanced wave monitoring data from Valldalsmagasinet in Røldal, Norway. The project is part of ongoing collaboration with Hydro Energi and Lyse Kraft, who together own the reservoir, and supports the broader InMoDam research initiative focused on understanding wave and ice loading on rockfill dams under changing climate conditions.

The project builds on previous installations at the reservoir. In 2023, Intoto deployed a wind measurement system at Valldalsmagasinet. The new contract represents a significant upgrade, enabling continuous monitoring of wave forces that act on the Valldalsdammen structure.

Proven Technology for Extreme Reservoir Conditions

Intoto will deploy and operate its specialized mooring system designed to stabilize wave buoys in hydropower reservoirs where water levels fluctuate significantly. The system has been field-tested since 2022 in two Statkraft reservoirs, demonstrating strong reliability in demanding operational environments. It has since moved into full operational use with Statkraft, Vattenfall, and Sira-Kvina Kraftselskap, where it continues to deliver stable real-time performance.

Valldalsmagasinet presents the largest water-level regulation range yet for the system, with variations up to 70 meters. Early results from autumn 2025 show stable real-time data transmission and trouble-free operation, validating the robustness of the technology in one of the most extreme reservoir settings to date.

Trusted Partner for Dam Safety

“Our SmartDam™ technologies continue to provide valuable, real-time insight into how waves and climate affect dam structures,” said Frode Aagedal, CEO of Intoto. “This contract demonstrates the trust placed in Intoto as we transition from prototype deployments to long-term operational monitoring services for reservoirs and dams.”

Through 2025–2027, Intoto will operate and maintain the equipment at Valldalsmagasinet and deliver high-quality wave data in collaboration with Dampartner NUF. The data delivered will strengthen the safety picture of Valldalsdammen, helping owners better understand climate-driven forces that affect critical hydropower infrastructure.

With this strengthened partnership, Intoto continues to help the hydropower industry advance safer and more resilient dam operations for the future.
